Wake Up ~ Be The Change: Authority

I was struck recently by my colleague, Gretta Vosper’s premise:

“There is no supernatural realm, being, force; there is no authoritative or revealed “word”; we set for ourselves the humane values and ideals to which we aspire and we set those above us and work toward living them out as completely as we are able; we are the source of blessing and curse in the world; the line between good and evil runs straight through our own hearts.”

Gretta is the founder of the Canadian Centre for Progressive Christianity (CCPC), an organization based on a post-theistic perspective.

Once again the heart is mentioned as the centre of blessing or curse and not something or someone outside ourselves.  When we consciously connect heart to heart something shifts and transformation is possible.

To look outside ourselves for some final authority on how we should or shouldn’t live our lives is naïve and often dangerous.  Quite simply, how we treat ourselves and others does matter.

Gretta’s excerpt reminded me of this message from the Hopi Elders:

“We have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour. Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the hour and that there are things to consider.

Where are you living?

What are you doing?

What are your relationships?

Are you in the right relationships?

Where is your water?

Know your garden.

It is time to speak your truth.

Create your community.

Be good to each other.

And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

This could be a good time!

There is a river flowing now very fast.

It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.

They will try to hold on to the shore.

They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly.

Know the river has its destination.

The elders say we must let go of the shore, and push off and into the river, keep our eyes open and our head above water.

See who is in there with you and celebrate.

At this time in history we are to take nothing personally,

Least of all ourselves,

For the moment we do,

Our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lone wolf is over, Gather yourselves together!

Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary.

All that you do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we have been waiting for……!”

…The Elders, Hopi Nation, Oraibi, Arizona

We are all interconnected to each other and every living thing (including Mother Earth).  Our hearts connect us and each of us is responsible for the world we inhabit and create, for being a blessing or a curse.  We are our final authority.
